The Best Clippers for Thoroughbreds

What to consider when choosing Horse Clippers for Thoroughbreds?

Thoroughbreds tend to have less hairy coats than many of the other breeds of horses and ponies, but do still require clipping during winter months, particularly if competing or being ridden on a regular basis.

As their hair tends to be soft and fine, this makes horse clipping so much easier and quicker. Light Duty horse clippers are an ideal choice for a thoroughbred, as they are perfect for clipping lighter coats and finer hair. The blades that come with light duty horse clippers are the snap on variety. This enables the user to choose various grades of blades to suit the type of coat and clip.

Light duty horse clippers can be operated from a mains or battery power source. Most of the battery options are an integral part of the handpiece. This means the horse clipper is easy to hold and manage and ideal for clipping in any situation. Purchasing an extra battery and spare blades are always a good choice, giving continuous clipping.

The clipper battery can be re-charged in the cradle that comes with the clipper package. The blades require no tensioning, and snap onto the head of the clipper with ease.

The Advantages of Light Duty Horse Clippers for Thoroughbreds

Light Duty Horse Clippers are more than capable of clipping thoroughbreds due to their finer and softer type of coat. They will make light work of clipping, even during the winter months when the coat is thick and fluffy.

Light Duty horse clippers take the A5 snap on blade system, enabling a wide choice of blades. The most popular blade is the No 10 wide blade which cuts to around 2mm and is perfect for larger body areas. A smaller, narrower blade is also available which can be attached to the horse clipper and can be purchased separately. This is ideal for trimming up around ears and other sensitive areas, and is a cost-effective option, as it can then double up as a trimmer.

Light Duty horse clippers are so much quieter to use with less vibration. Both these attributes are worth considering when choosing a horse clipper for any purpose but particularly when the horse is sensitive to noise, nervous, young or flighty.

Light duty horse clippers are more suited for fine, softer coated horses and ponies. For more challenging coat conditions, more power will be needed and the choice would move up to the medium duty or heavy duty categories.
