The Best Horse Clippers for Horses and Ponies with Cushings

Equine Cushing’s disease is a progressive condition affecting the pituitary gland. One of the symptoms is the increase in growth of the coat which results in the horse not moulting as affectively and regularly. A Cushing’s coat tends grow very densely and sometimes with an additional curl to the hair, making horse clipping challenging.

The choice of horse clippers is vast, but the best horse clippers for horses with cushings are the ones with the more powerful motor and torque.
Horse clipper blades need to be chosen carefully, as selecting the correct grade of blade to cut through this type of hair can make the job much easier.

What blades should I choose for clipping a horse with Cushings?

Clipping regulary to keep the coat short is the easiest way of managing horses with cushings. If done regulary, every few weeks throughout the year, a medium (2mm) blade should be suitable.

If the coat is being left and clipped only two or three times a year, a coarser blade will be needed. Lister has designed a specific blade for this purpose. It is called the Covercote horse clipper blade and cuts the longer top hair but leaves the shorter under hair for continued protection.

For other makes of clippers, a coarse blade usually suffices. These usually clip to around 3-4mm depending on the brand of clipper. Our learning portal has a guide to all makes of clipper blades and suitability
